Hi, I’m Henry. Growing up, I was always a lively child who struggled to sit still and fit into the expectations of school. I often found myself being told off for fidgeting, moving around or learning in a different way to other people. Looking back, I know I would have benefited hugely from a place like Skills Over School. When Nicki set up the Hub, I could immediately see the difference it was making to young people and their families. I decided to volunteer one day a week because I wanted to give something back and help create the kind of opportunities I wish had been available when I was younger. One of the things I enjoy most at the Hub is helping young people with practical projects, particularly woodwork and build sessions. I love seeing young people create something with their own hands, learn new skills and take pride in what they’ve achieved. Sometimes all it takes is someone believing in them and giving them the chance to succeed. What makes the Hub special to me is that there is no expectation for everyone to be the same. Young people are encouraged to be themselves, explore their interests and learn in ways that work for them. Many of us know what it feels like not to fit into the traditional mould, which is why we’ve worked so hard to create an environment where everyone belongs. I genuinely believe that every young person has strengths and talents to offer, and I enjoy helping them discover what those are. For me, the best part of volunteering is seeing a young person leave with more confidence than they arrived with. Outside of the Hub, you’ll usually find me fishing, working on practical projects or spending time with my family.
